For the first time researchers have studied animal models to show that insulin is initially stimulated via the long vagus nerve. This stimulation does not occur out within the body. It occurs within brain regions. This is truly amazing.
Insulin is initially triggered by our very initial tastes, smells, imaginings, and thoughts of food, not the glucose within the food itself. Once we have eaten the food and have begun to digest the food, insulin is triggered by the glucose content of the food. The molecule in question is the same molecule that drives inflammation, thyroid dysfunction, immune system dysfunction, depression, and other diseases.
In this study, researchers identified that pre-existing collections of this molecule held within the immune system cells of the brain are released when we begin to eat or imagine eating. Keep in mind that inflammation and infectious disease also cause high levels of this molecule. Excessive secretion of this molecule or the inability to neutralize it can lead to imbalanced responses and be an independent cause of insulin resistance, obesity, and metabolic syndrome.
The interconnections between mind, brain, the immune system, the digestive system, the senses, and metabolism are so very complex…and very fascinating.
