The sun can energize us. Its daily and seasonal cycles are the foundations of our circadian rhythms. Sunlight absorbed through our skin drives our production of the master hormone Vitamin D. Of course we know to optimize our diet, to stop smoking, control our weight, stop drinking alcohol, stop smoking marijuana, and exercise. But you may be surprised to know that there is something that trumps all of these.
Our nation’s healthcare system is in crisis because it costs an exorbitant amount to keep a person with a chronic disease alive and healthy. The number of people with chronic diseases has increased because our lifestyle choices can push our bodies out of balance. So it comes down to this: How might we choose to live healthier lives?
We often think that our lives are controlled by our genes. In some sense they are. In a larger sense, our lives are controlled by the interaction between our genes and our environment. These interactions determine how our genes will manifest themselves.
As you grow older, benchmarking your bone health becomes increasingly important. Your bones reach maximum density in your twenties and then begin to slowly decline. This decline markedly increases once menopause or andropause occur, during times of increased stress or infection, during times of significant nutritional challenge, and during times of deconditioning or lack of exercise.
